I have a chick that is about 3 weeks old. She has always been a constant peeper but never noticed anything off otherwise. I checked her out this morning and I noticed her anus is a little swollen. What could this be? Constipation possibly? She eats and drinks normal.

thanks

Anyone? I just fed the chicks and she is not eating ... has a little discharge coming from her anus. I am not sure if it is stool or something else? Sort of a milky brown color?

Problems with li'l chicks can be worrisome! I'm glad you are watching out for her to find out about any kind of help she might need.
Please do indeed post more info so maybe someone can give advice.
Best wishes

i couldn't open your link, but, it you have a chick with a swollen vent area like it's full and pushed out, it is probably constipated. It does not necessarily need to have pasty butt to be constipated. You want to soak it's bum in warm water for about 10 minutes, then take it out and put a heat lamp on it's bottom. Not too close on the heat lamp, put your hand between the lamp and baby's bottom to make sure it's not too hot. It should be able to pass the poo. If it does not, repeat the procedure.

i had a couple of araucana chicks that came in from a hatchery that had this problem - HORRIBLE constipation with very pasty poo. i had to do this procedure several times with them. If you do not get this to pass, they will die.

Thanks Colleen I will try that and let you know how she does.
