Middletown PA
My family and I recently started our own little chicken family of hens. My mistake I looked at the wrong Middletown in Pa ordinances and now have gotten notice to get rid of our flock. We love our hens and would like advice on how to go about approaching our local borough authority. We've had them so far for 3 months or so without problem till our one "hen" started crowing! We have proper housing for them and a big fenced in backyard. The surrounding townships allow the raising of hens, no roos. Any help would be appreciated. We wouldn't want to have to rehome them.

Do a search here on BYC, there have been many post about getting the laws changed. Salem, VA was able to get the laws changed I am sure you can goggle info on that. I know one of the advocates who helped get the law changed and she had to go to the city council meetings to discuss and helped them come up with the zoning laws. I would start with the other towns and look at their zoning laws and start there. Most city/towns will not allow roosters, where I live the code says no roos! So he may have to go. I am sorry I don't have something concrete to give or tell you but this will give you a bump and maybe someone else who has been able to get the zoning/law changed can help! GOOD LUCK.

Check out the August issue of Southern Living, there is an article about raising backyard chickens (even the city of Atlanta allows chickens!!)
