Coweta, OK
I think my toddler just injured one of our chicks, he just loves them and keeps getting them in and out of the brooder, even though I keep warning him to be soft and careful. I went to check on them and one was laying in the brooder, picked him up and he opened his eyes but still won't get up, now he won't wake up. Still breathing though, I put him in the still warm incubator to isolate him, but I'm guessing there's nothing I can do for him?

I put a lock on the brooder- I just can't keep him out! We only had 4 chicks I don't want to lose anymore.

Toddlers are notorious for thinking that they are being gentle but, if the chick squirmed, he would squeeze. I am hoping that your little chick makes it...

I'm glad you put a lock on the brooder.

They are only 2 days old, too much of a squeeze is my guess, or possibly a drop. :( Hopefully he will pull out of it, but if not I've certainly learned my lesson on this one. Our "brooder" is an old bird cage with cardboard on the bottom and partway up around the sides, and a baby gate strapped to the top. Luckily it is enclosed so all I have to do is put a small padlock across the door. My son is VERY not happy about this situation but I think it is for the best! This was our first batch of eggs we've ever done.

Well the chick is peeping and trying to walk again, no longer comatose on his side... I am hoping after a break from being held he will be OK. Raising chicks is more nerve wracking than having a new baby around the house....

I loved having baby chicks in the house..then again, I don't have a toddler to worry about ;)

Haha, yep. When I got my dozen chicks 3 months ago I had 1, 3, and 5 year olds! They wanted to love on the chickens a little too much. Nerve wracking!! My avi is a pic of when I caught my DS on the upper deck with the shopping cart...inside was one of our 10 day old chicks he'd retrieved himself and taken for a ride!

LOVE it!

Thank goodness mine were all older...I had a 16 year old and a 7 year old when our first chicks arrived :) I do have pics of my son putting his favorite cochin mix in the back of his little tikes truck...our friend's 3 yr old loved giving her a ride :) Sorry about the poor quality..the sun reflecting off the deck that day did horrible things to the camera!

And here is my son taking another one of his favorite pullets, Whitie, a d'uccle X oegb, for a ride on his tractor...

Looks like he's going to pull through, may have a wing injury I am going to keep an eye on. Thanks everyone for keeping me sane as I sat here on pins and needles today!
