I think my toddler just injured one of our chicks, he just loves them and keeps getting them in and out of the brooder, even though I keep warning him to be soft and careful. I went to check on them and one was laying in the brooder, picked him up and he opened his eyes but still won't get up, now he won't wake up. Still breathing though, I put him in the still warm incubator to isolate him, but I'm guessing there's nothing I can do for him?
I put a lock on the brooder- I just can't keep him out! We only had 4 chicks I don't want to lose anymore.
Hopefully he will pull out of it, but if not I've certainly learned my lesson on this one. Our "brooder" is an old bird cage with cardboard on the bottom and partway up around the sides, and a baby gate strapped to the top. Luckily it is enclosed so all I have to do is put a small padlock across the door. My son is VERY not happy about this situation but I think it is for the best! This was our first batch of eggs we've ever done.
I do have pics of my son putting his favorite cochin mix in the back of his little tikes truck...our friend's 3 yr old loved giving her a ride
