This is my first hatch. 5 of 7 hatched right on time and fine. The other 2 are two days over-due. They had chicks in them when candled prior to setting. How long do I wait until giving up?

Thanks for replying!!!
The others are out and happy ina their new nursery.
I candled them last night. In one I can see a chick, but the air sac is very large. I couldn't see movement, so I suspect it may be dead. Also, that same egg seems weighted -- it will roll to one side -- like one side is heavier. Almost like the chick stopped developing and is stuck on the side.
For the other egg, I can't tell anything when candling. It just looks all full and solid. I am tempted to start chipping away at it, but I don't know...

If it is not in the internal air cell, there is no hope. If any had a chance and were late, I could see that they've internally pipped and see movement. Never had one hatch after day 22.

I would toss them. If they haven't internally pipped, they won't survive if you chip away at the egg. Sounds like the first one you are describing is shrink-wrapped.

Oh and I am sorry about the chicks :( It's always sad to lose them. Especially when they make it so far. I've never had 100% hatch rate. Always have a couple that don't hatch. It's how it goes. Sometimes there are deformities.

Okay. Thanks for responding. I am glad that I had 5 out of 7 hatch for my first try, especially with all of the incubation stresses

Having 5 happy chicks is great!

Thanks for fixing that, aoxa. I think I get how to do it now.:)
