Hi

My rooster passed away an hour ago, and I'm looking for some sense of what may have been wrong with him.

About two weeks ago he was doing something odd with his neck, I had a look in his mouth and there was something in his throat. After googling I thought it could be canker or wet pox. I took him to the vet that day, when she looked what was in his throat it had gone but she did diagnose a chest infection and prescribed antibiotics which he completed. Because of the Corona restrictions I couldn't take him back for a review but he appeared fine. 3 days ago he was having a dust bath and then suddenly started flapping around, his neck contracted into an odd position - sort of like wry neck, his legs and feet with also contracting and relaxing rapidly and he was rolling around. I picked him up to steady him. After a few minutes his body relaxed, he stayed with me for an hour. He was sleepy, I gave him some vitamins and these appeared to have helped. He spent the night in the house, he was eating and drinking fine, crowing away and wanting to explore. He had been fine since, doing all his normal chicken stuff and had lots of energy. There have been points that I thought his comb looked darker, and would pay more attention to him when I noticed this, no obvious sign of difficulty breathing were present.

This evening I saw he went from pecking the grass to standing oddly, one of his legs was going out to the side and he looked 'not with it', then his body started contracting again, flapping away, neck twisting. I brought him inside, waited until his body had relaxed, and he went sleepy again. I gave him some more drops and let him rest with me. After 10mins his body contracted again, this time really violently, I struggled to keep him safe as I couldn't keep hold of him with the force so I put him on the floor and supported his body so as not to restrict the movement but so that he wouldn't injure himself. His comb got darker, and when his body stopped moving, he was struggling to breathe. This got progressively worse, he was really struggling and it was not pleasant to watch. After a couple of minutes he passed away.

Has anyone experienced something like this before or can shed light on what may have been wrong with him? Can chickens have seizures?

Sorry for your loss. It sounds as if he may have had a heart attack. The darkening of comb color can be an indicator of cardiac insufficiency.
