Hey all,
My bantam calico Cochin is sick I believe. The top of her head is almost bare and she is losing feathers, if you try and like brush her with your hand feathers just come out. From what I observed she hasn’t acted any differently. Ideas? Should I separate her, the other birds don’t seem to be picking on her.

Could be starting to molt? It could also be that another chicken is pecking out her head feathers. Roosters will grab on there when mating.

I don’t have any roosters at the moment, and haven’t seen any of the other hens start picking them out, doesn’t mean it’s not happening though. I thought about molting but does it seem a little early? Usually mine wait until late summer/early fall.

How old is she? You should be able to tell if she is molting if you see dropped feathers in the coop. Chickens will sometimes stand around or sit on the roost and let another chicken pull out feathers.
