So before I locked down my eggs, I candled them and didnt see any veins. Of course it was sad that I didnt see any more progress and then I had to lock them down and not look at them for 3 days. It ate away at me until today (late day 19). I decided to candle them and I saw veins again! I very carefully put them back and closed the incubator vowing to not open it again until they hatch. My question is if I touched the eggs today day 19, are they gonna die. I know it is illegal to candle them after lockdown but I couldn't help myself. Did I ruin the hatch?

Another question... When i was illegally candling them today, On one of the eggs, the air cell was not at the base of the egg, it was sort of on the lower side, sideways... is this a sign its gonna hatch soon or what?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.. this is my first hatch and im losing my mind.

My advice? Don't worry about it. Hens get up from their eggs so there's really no difference.

Also, I am new to the incubator method. Exactly 3 weeks and 2 days ago I set my incubator with 21 eggs (just to try it out)
It was a CRAZY 3 weeks. Some days the humidity would drop to 13% and some days as high as 80%. Temperature varied from 98-102 degrees. I thought I messed up horribly. At day 14, I removed 7 infertile eggs. So I had 14 left. Of those 14, only 9 hatched and I was surprised. I thought none would hatch.

Bottom line, you're overthinking it too much. Don't worry, I did too. But they should hatch normally. (If they're fertile) good luck! Mine hatched 2 days ago and I already put round 2!

No. Not everyone subscribes to the "hands off" theory. That's just one way of hatching. I don't usually candle on day 19, but I will candle on day 20/21 if I am questioning my eggs. There is no such thing as an "illegal" candle. What you saw is the air cell is drawn down. Isn't that awesome that you got to see that? It's even more awesome when you get to see an internal pip. Yup, I'm one of those people that don't observe "lockdown" I actually open my bator frequently during hatch (I run a higher humidity as a precaution) I have awesome hatches, healthy chicks and I get to fully experience the hatch. So you just enjoy your hatch and don't worry about touching those eggs.

Before they start hatching, the air cell draws down on one side, usually, this is where your chick will pip. If you mark air cells at day 18 you usually see the air cell tilted to one side. The lowest part of the air cell gives you an idea of where they will pip, that is the side that draws down before they hatch.

It's only breaking a law if you talk to a strict "hands off" hatcher.
