Gosling trying to hatch is covered in a hard sticky substance....essentially glued together. What do I do? What is it? What caused it???

It is caused by low humidity and called "shrink wrapping." Could you post a photo so we can see the extent of it and how far along(hatching) the gosling is? Is it part in/out of the shell. You can moisten everywhere you can reach with a wet finger.

Sometimes it is necessary to slowly and delicately try to remove tiny bits of shell while dampening as you go along. If the slightest bleeding shows - stop at once. If the chick has his beak out at least he can get air - so that would mean you can be patient in trying to rescue him

Please put "shrink wrapping" in the search box - a lot of info should pop up and maybe photos of how the procedure is accomplished. Good luck

Thanks! He's mostly out of the shell, this stuff is sticky. I don't know how to post a pic. ????

Ok. I double checked on the shrink wrapping. That seems different than what I'm dealing with... It's not the white membrane, that's on the inside of the discarded shell... The gosling itself has a thick sticky covering?????

Alright

So how is the gosling doing now and yes their are two layers of membraine inside the egg shell and yes they are sticky and can act just like shrink wrap and you can use warm not hot water and spray the little gosling and wipe softly it comes off ....

My goslings were covered in it ....

But as you see they survived ......

Welcome to BYC!

How is the little guy this morning? I hope he made it out of the shell and is doing well. If you are still having issues, you can post this question in our Geese or Emergency section for more help. I hope the little guy is ok. :-)
