Actually, I've got to disagree with you there. There are an astounding number of people who move out into wooded/natural areas who regard their personal space as being 'outside of nature'. Move to where the critters live and you and your animals, should you neglect to keep either protected, ARE part of nature and, thereby, part of the food chain. The only way to change that is to keep yourself and your animals in protected accommodations. Kill one predator and another will gladly take its place. Thinking you can kill every predator IVO your coop is not only foolish, it would truly be a waste of time.

The electric fence sounds like your best bet, and that's based on the many knowledgeable minds that populate this board. We had a bear sighting last week...first one in the 9 years I've lived here. Wasn't in my yard, but I'll be putting up an electric fence anyway. Would rather err on the side of caution with my birds, right?

Getting married? Congratulations!!

Wow....and I thought it was only us that were beset by multiple "happenings" in the same timeframe, usually resulting in much chaos. lol Timing's everything, eh?

Hope all works out with your bear situation!

We use electric fencing and the Black Bears/Cougars/Wolves have stayed away and it wasn't expensive or hard to do, took about 1/2 a day and maybe $200.
The guy down the road doesn't and he has had nothing but trouble. You think he would clue in? after loosing many hundreds of dollars worth of chickens and feed. Plus now he has a bigger problem the bear knows there is food there.
The Conservation Officers have shot one Bear and told him to get a electric fence and contain his feed properly and that he was contributing to the problem.
He still doesn't "get it".

\\?

I actually agree with your statement. Every predator that violates the coop would be both a waste of time and foolish and yes, it is important to have protected accomodations, but to allow an extremely large predator like a bear to constantly violate your property and sense of well-being is the foolish part. The individual who has the bear problem is taking care of that problem in the best way for themselves (live trapping) and that is acceptable and there is nothing foolish about that. But large predators that can rip your "protected accomodations" to shreds should be able to be dealt with harshly if the need arises. I recently found a cougar track in my driveway, not more than 5 feet from my kitchen window and I live in town! I am going to call the fish and game service (ODF&W), but should they fail to trap or hunt it themselves I am not going to be helpless and let it pick off my pets or my children if I see it that close to the house again.
