My Welsummer hen, Cedar, seems to be having trouble with the heat. I live in central Texas and it can get up to 110 in the summer. I have two oscillating fans in the 8x8x14 coop, which is shaded. I add ice to their water and change it regularly. I've even taken to dunking the whole flock in cool water if i notice them hyper ventilating or acting lethargic. None of the flock (mostly different breeds) seem to be nearly as affected as Cedar and Im terrified i'm going to find her dead one of these days. Is it her breed? Is there anything else i can do?

I doubt it's her breed, but could be just that individual hens ability to cope with the heat.

You might try freezing gallon jugs of water and setting them out in the shade, I've read they will lean against them to cool off. I've placed shallow pans of ice water out and they wade in and drink from them.

Might not be a good idea to dunk their whole bodies in too cold of water, could shock them.

Is it dry or humid where you are? If it's dry, misting systems can really help.

Thanks for the response, i have several gallon jugs of water freezing at the moment.
Its pretty humid here. I was trying to avoid leaving pools of water because flies can be a problem but at this point i'll try anything.

I read about dunking them here: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/04/beat-heat-how-to-help-chickens-survive.html

Today I changed their roofing from clear plastic siding to reflective tin and added electrolytes to their drinking water.
I'll post if anything changes, thanks again.
