A month and a half ago I bought 3 young pheasants (4-6 weeks old). They are in the current stage of growing adult feathers. I know that two of them are normal ring neck pheasants, but I do not know about one of the males. I understand that the ringneck species has many different subspecies in the breed. The bird that I am unsure about, is much darker in color, and has very distinct purple and blue feathers. He also has a very distinct white marking on his neck just below his face, and has had that marking since I got him, it is not just an adult feathering. My best guess as to which sub species would be the melanistic mutant. But I would really like to hear others opinion on this. I'll include some pictures as well.

You are correct that is a juvenile melanistic cock bird. Here are a few pics of mine so you can know what to expect he will look like, also a hen melanistic.

Adult female melanistic
Their plumage iridescence will change according to how the light strikes their plumage. Sometimes it appears purple, sometimes an iridescent green, mixed with shades of pink and purple.
There are 3 primary color variants, Black, Green, and Blue melanistic pheasants. There is a lot of different plumage coloration among all three of the primary color variants.

Adult Green melanistics
The above birds were from these Green parent birds. They threw both the Green and what I call common melanistic birds. The common have more of the Chinese Ring necked colors on their rump and flank feathers. Some may even have a ring or incomplete ring around their necks on the male birds as can be seen on the above birds. HTH
