I have a chicken that gasps for breath when disturbed even a little bit. She eventually calms down. She occasionally makes a honking sound. Some say gape worm, some say URI. I have her isolated and put corrid in her water just in case. We recently treated with Elector PSP, but she was breathing this way prior to. At first I assumed she was just hot. If it is gape worm, will the Elector PSP not take care of it? I have read Ivermectin will take care of gape worm...but if it is respiratory, what can I do? I am in California, so pretty much anything has to have an RX...

Elector PSP will not treat gapeworm. If gapeworm might be a problem, I would get SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer and give 0.25 ml per pound orally for 5 straight days. Gapeworm is pretty rare, so I would look inside the beak and throat for any yellow material or plaques, and mucus or other problem.

If you could upload a short video to YouTube or Vimeo with a link posted here that would help. Fungal infection from mold or a viral or bacterial respiratory disease could be possible. Are there any other symptoms, such as sneezing, bubbles in eyes, or face swelling?

She is really having some gasping and trouble getting her breath, isn’t she? Poor thing. Can she eat or drink anything? It does not hurt to give her the SafeGuard for 5 days to treat her for gapeworms, just in case. Are you seeing any bubbles in her eyes, nasal drainage, or swelling in her eyelids or face? How is the ventilation in your coop? Has she been near any mold? Do you have any tylosin or other antibiotic that might treat a respiratory disease? I would try to get her in a room with some cool mist or a vaporizer.

No bubbles. Maybe some slight drainage. No swelling. She acts totally fine, then when you pick her up she starts breathing like this. She will toss her head back if your holding her and go limp. I don’t SEE anything in her mouth, and I can hear her gasping, but there is no rattling or wet lung sounds. I am in California and can’t get any antibiotics without an RX...I did order some Tylosin, but can’t get Tylan 200...I will order the SafeGaurd. Amazon has it.
