I didn't know where to post this question..I am receiving a couple of adult Bantams in the next week. They are being shipped from a couple of states away. What is the proper care immediately after picking them up? Do you wait so many hours before feeding to let them settle in or give them food right away? I figure water would be in order but was curious about food. Any and all advice welcomed..

I honestly would take some feed and water in a carrier. Remember these are adult birds not chicks and hopefully the sender sent some food such as fresh veggies in the box to supplement them with food and water. I would give it to them right away and keep them warm.

When we ship we always add a cut up orange/apple and a hand full of feed. Most places we ship takes only overnight but some areas take up to 2 days. With birds shipped to me I have yet to have had a problem (knock on wood). Just have some fresh water and feed ready for them and you will be fine.

I read somewhere its not good to feed them oranges. ? Smart idea though on the fresh fruits to keep em during their travel time.

I think its due to the citric acid in it..

We have never had any trouble doing it and have not had any complaints about it either. Guess just one of those opinions someone has. Can't say if it's true or not and have never read anything negative about it. Other times we do use Apples but the oranges seem to hold more "liquid" for them. Alot of our customers say when the birds arrive they aren't "dying" for a drink.

If I ship birds I put grapes in with them, when I get adult birds I put them in the cage I want them in and put food and water in. If lets say I get a pheasant in I wait until night before I put them in. Hope that helps.
