Chirping

So my Golden Laced Wyandotte hen decided she wanted to be a mom. She originally had 6 eggs under her, but 3 disappeared and 2 got trampled, so long story short she only has 1 egg left. I do not know how long she's been sitting on them (I was not there when a family member let her sit on them). I'm guessing its somewhere around day 18-21. I had checked it quick last night and the air cell grew a lot in the last 3 days also the one side of it looks weird? I saw the chick moving in there so I took that as a good sign, but I was wondering if someone might be able to tell me when and if it's going to hatch.

The black part in the second picture is what was moving a LOT last night. I really hope it's going to hatch, but if it doesn't I guess that's life. I'm just afraid it's gotten jostled around by the other hens too much (that's how the other 2 got trampled).

It might hatch... It looks already internally pipped to me.. can you hear any chirping?

When eggs disappear from under a broody, I have to suspect rats... which will eat chicks.

If nothing happens for your hen you can consider adopting her some feed store chicks during the night.

I can't hear chirping, but i'm keeping my fingers crossed that it's going to be okay. :fl

The disappearing chicks might have been a curious 5 year old boy.... but you could be right about the rats. I was planning on heading out to our Tractor Supply even if it does hatch to get it some siblings. It's really just an excuse to get more baby chicks. :D

I'm in a similar situation, but I'm wondering if the number of chicks I buy her has to equal the number of eggs she was on.
Absolutely not... my Silkie hens (or others) will sit on air and happily raise as many chicks as I think they can handle. They can't count real well, but quickly learn to recognize intruder additions if added once they have left the nest. I go no more than 4 for bantam hens and my Rock hen raised 10 chicks... but they get in comfy little cliques with each other and don't listen to mum as well in that large of group.

You should get how many chicks you have the space for as adults, think she can raise, and that you want... I like to leave space to add to new layers every year so I don't miss out on eggs when older gals molt.

My favorite thing about adopting feed store chicks is the opportunity to try a variety of breeds AND less chance of dealing with extra roosters!

6 days is the very oldest I have successfully adopted. Any older than that and they don't tend to be as interested in learning mums voice and following her. So they don't accept the mum as well once they get older... Noting ALL chicks at TSC will be at least 2 days + when they arrive at the store. :fl

Broody mom is in the back and the hen the egg came from is in the front.

Then the rooster (chick got the roosters coloring I think)
