help with a roost

Do you have cold winters where you live?

I ask because it is important to have a flat roost so that your chicken can lay on top of its feet to keep them warm and free of frost bite. A roost bar that the chicken curves its feet around is not very comfortable, nor safe for them in the winter.

I use a 2x4 for my roost. I'm not sure what kind of breeds you have in your flock, but be sure your roost is a safe height off the ground, large breeds especially are more prone to foot problems and a substantial jump off of the roost bar isn't always a good idea for them.
Bantams don't really have this problem, as they can soften their fall much better.

Hi and welcome to BYC - you have some great advice already so I'll just say hello!

All the best

some folks like to tack a towel to the roost bar to help keep chicken feet warmer.
