Sorry this is probably gonna be long I am new with birds and have a lot of questions.

For starters so far I have had one baby quail hatch. He hatched at 1 AM June 25 on what would’ve been the 19th day of incubation.

So far I’ve been feeding him turkey feed that’s been ground together with boiled egg yolks. 1. I’m wondering how old he had to be before I can start feeding him things like greens and seeds?

Since he’s all alone I feel really bad because he screams and cries whenever I leave him alone. 2. Will he be all right for now?

As for the other eggs I’m worried about them not hatching because the incubator I’m using is one I made myself since my dad won’t let me buy one. There’s been quite a few temp fluctuations just been dealing with by messing with it every two hours night and day. 3. Will the temp fluctuations affect my hatch rates?

Also one of the eggs (I started with 13) got dropped a little over a week ago. I sealed the cracks with crayon wax because it’s all I had and I checked today and there’s still no smell coming from it. More than half the egg is covered in wax. If there is a chick developing I’m assuming he will need help out of the egg. 4. How would I know when it’s time to give him a hand?

If the other eggs do not hatch and I only have one would I have to get him a partner and if so I don’t know how I would go about it since the only place I can get quails would be online. it’s a miracle my dad even let me attempt to hatch these eggs I don’t think he would agree to me ordering another online.

Oh and one last thing, 5. when the chick is sitting in my hand he likes to run his beak in a nipping motion very fast up and down the side of my finger is he trying to eat me or groom me?

Make sure the mash is nonmedicated. You can provide seeds and greens at any time. Right now he would be unable to eat seed due to his size. Buttons grow very fast so it won't be long before he will eat tiny seed. When feeding seed be sure to provide grit to help with digestion.

Since he’s all alone I feel really bad because he screams and cries whenever I leave him alone. 2. Will he be all right for now? He would do better with a pal. Give him as much attention as you can.

Sorry, is isn't likely that more will hatch, but wait a day before giving up on them. Yes, fluctuating temperatures would have effected the hatch rate. There is a seven egg (chicken) incubator on Ebay for less than $20 and it works great. I have one and I'm an old geezer. Talk/show it to your dad as he might have the impression that an incubator would be expensive and expensive to use. This one is ideal for a beginner and not expensive to use at all. It is digital and keeps a constant temperature-it would work well with quail eggs with some modification to the egg tray.

It is highly unlike that it will hatch especially if the membrane was damaged.

Perhaps you can find one locally. Talk with your dad and maybe he will let you use Craig's List; it's free.
If your dad says it's OK you can post an ad that your looking for Button Quail. As I said before, in the lack of another button, give the chick as much attention as you can.

I've seen that behavior where they run their beak up and down glass-thirsty. Be sure to put rocks, marbles, etc. in the drinking water so the chick doesn't get wet or drown.

Thank you so much for the reply!

Sadly my first attempt at buying a $20 incubator on eBay failed miserably. The seller was taken off and I was scammed luckily got my money back.

Though thankfully now I won’t have to resort to hatching more since today another baby hatched and a third one is pipping!
