I will check tommorow but last I checked the egg was warm and the mom was nearOk. I would just say watch and see if the mama comes back. If she does, that's awesome! If she doesn't don't beat yourself up though, you did great for trying to help mama out.
You bet they are fearless of us! They are cool looking birdsThat's cool. Ours come in November and are gone by March. They're super cool little birds.

Ya ours are around year long our climate stays the very much the same and if they want warm they come to us if they want cold the go to the coast with is 45 mins away so they are always hereI wish ours stuck around longer.
Yeah those are the kind we have here. Birds like juncos actually have pretty much no sense of smell, even if you rubbed the egg on stinky socks the mom would never know. It's the frequent checking the nest and bumping her off that would cause her to abandon it. We toured a wildlife rescue once and the lady there said it was funny how many people said birds will abandon their nests if they smell human scent. She told us that there are only a few birds that have a good sense of smell, like vultures and hawks, etc. She said actually almost no animal will abandon their young just because of scent. Not even wild rabbits or mice or deer. She said if they do, it's because the human scared them too much, not from the scent. Please don't take any of this as rude, I just wanted to let you guys know what the lady told us. She said it just was a common myth. Sorry if I sounded mean, I don't usually correct people here much because almost everyone here knows way more than me lol. Definitely handle as little as possible though to avoid breaking it.We have lots of juncos here in SE MO all winter. Slate grey above and white below. Good luck with the nest! I'd advise handling it as little as possible, sometimes the human scent will drive the mother away.
Yes I agree I always thought that was a mth but I just saw and a swarm of bees bigger that a house just came and went to where the bird nest was. I made it with the top of the cardboard box open should I make the sides tipped in of no?Yeah those are the kind we have here. Also some neighborhood kids thought that the mom of the nest was something the size of a bald eagle and that it would kill us allYes I agree I always thought that was a mth but I just saw and a swarm of bees bigger that a house just came and went to where the bird nest was.
