A buddy of mine got a bunch of chicks from a friend and gave me 12 for free. He said the friend had Americaunas, Barred Rocks, Rhode Island Reds, Leghorns, Buff Orpingtons, and Jersey Giants. Possibly others. The chicks are 2 wks old now and I'm wondering what I have (Breed/Gender). I know it's early, but I can't help but wonder.

Large chick, all gray/blueish

I have two of these. This one is larger than the other and its feathers are much more developed

Do the feathers on the back tell you anything about gender?

pic 2 girl
pic 3 girl
pic 4 boy
pic 5 girl but could be a boy due to camera angle
pic 6 is all boy

Breed I'm no good at

You are pretty much thinking what I was thinking. I thought #1 could be a boy but I am brand new at this. What do you base your guess on? Comb size, feathers, leg size,,,????

1- easter egger roo?
2-leghorn pullet
3-australorp?
4-jersey giant, pullet
5-rir- roo
6- huge legs, but is feathering out like my BO pullets so could be a girl
These are all just guesses, and am fairly new to chickens so pretty uneducated ones lol

I hadn't thought about australorp. Could be. The guy we got them from had all different kinds so they are probably some kind of mix.

Ok, I will bite. How do you tell boys from girls by photos? I have 8 Buff Orps, almost 4 weeks old, and would love to tell which they are.

Second question: When can I put them outside? They are rapidly getting their adult feathers but it is still really cool out--today in the 50s. I took them out one day when it was nearly 80 and they seemed happy for quite a while.

No.6 looks like a roo, due to the comb development at this age. Could be wrong but, if you think it's a roo and it turns into a pullet that's only GOOD news. I don't know the breed either but, you have a very pretty assortment.

Most seem in agreement that #6 is a roo which would have been my guess.

Here's another pic of the gray one (#1). Does the comb on this one tell you anything?
