Got these hens a week ago. I know two of them are Barred Rock (black), not sure what the other four are. Any ideas?

Welcome to BYC as well!

I agree either RSL or Production Reds....with the dark already coming into the wings and backs, I'm thinking Production Red. Good news, they all look like pullets thus far :D

Production reds, RIRs, red sex links, and new hampsires tend to look similar as chicks. If you got them from a feed store, I'm guessing they are one of the first three breeds I mentioned.

If you get them at a feed store, they will be Production Reds....hatcheries that sell RIR and NH don't keep close enough to standard so they are called Production Red whether labeled RIR or NH.

The only big difference is the RSL vs. the PRed...RSL's are sex linked so you know 100% of the time if you got a girl. PReds are usually vent sexed at the hatchery (unless labeled straight run) with about 90 to 95% accuracy....so you can get males in the PReds.

RSL's will come in white at the wing tips and tail, with often white lacing around the neck and sometimes more white on the back.

PReds will be anywhere from an orange to a mid red and mature quickly (as do the RSLs). You can tell PRed boys pretty quickly, often by 5 weeks of age, as the combs take off and get noticeably larger and redder than the females.

By 5 to 6 weeks of age, you'll know if you've got RSL's or PReds, and if you likely have any males.
