I have a CLB Hen "Sunshine" who has an eye problem. She has been "off" for a couple days. Sitting puffed up closing eyes. She eating and drinking some. She is the lowest in the pecking order, is a little over a year old and has never laid an egg. This morning her right eye was closed. I picked her up and discovered white bumps on eye lid. One I got her eye open and then she kept it open for a littel while. I got pictures. Not sure what to treat this with. and want to go to town for something to help her. Can anyoe please suggest something I might get at a feed store or pharmacy as it being Sunday, there wont be any vets to help me. I would appriciate any help with this for my girl. thanks

If she’s lowest on the pecking order that could be a problem. And if she’s never laid an egg and is that old that could also be a problem. Has she always been like this? Often a sickly chicken at the bottom of the pecking order could mean that the chicken is dying. I have a lame chicken that multiple people said should be put down but I watched her closely and she was not in pain and she was not at the bottom of the pecking order. If your chicken is in pain and continues to be in pain then you should probably put it down. ☹️ It’s honestly cruel not to. I don’t have any medical suggestions besides calling tractor supply or something like that and asking if they have anything that could treat it. Sorry I didn’t have a medicine! I really hope she feels better!!

Not sure about the spots but her pupil doesn't look right. Try some antibiotic ointment or teramycin if you have it. Any drugstore should be able to point you to an ointment for her eye.

But it also sounds lie something else going on. If she has not layed before winter she may be getting ready to now that it is spring. Not sure where you are. Giving her some calcium won't hurt anything and may help if she's getting ready to lay.

She is a little listless and just not herself but I don't see indication of much pain, She is inside my warm studio resting comfortably for now. She's never been sickly just never laid an egg. She is timid and sweet and a little smaller then the rest and has always been more independent. She enjoys being held and cuddled more then all the others. So I dont think putting her down at this point is an option , but thanks.

Here eye looks possibly damaged. Can you get another picture of the right eye? It would be good to rinse her eye twice a day and apply the Terramycin or plain Neosporin Ointment 1/8 inch to the eye. Look for any bubbles in the eye, or respiratory symptoms (sneezing, gasping, head shaking, nasal drainage.) She might have been pecked in the eye, gotten something in it, or it could be a symptom of MG mycoplasma gallisepticum, a chronic respiratory disease.

Yes, the ointment must be "ophthalmic" if you are going to put it in her eye! Do NOT put regular neosporin in her eye! I hope she gets better, she doesn't look too unhappy in your photos! Good luck! :hugs

Yeds thank you! I figured it needed to be opthalmic in nature. Dont want to put anything that is not intenede for eye use near her eye. So im going to go down now for supplies. thanks

Sunshine update. For the past three days I have been treating her eye with Vetrycin eye wash and gel and applying Terramycin 2 times a day. Her eye swelled up considerably Monday but hasn't grown any larger since then. It inst oozing anything and I cant get anything to come out of the eye. She can open it slightly but for the most part it stays shut. From what I can see the eyeball itself looks fine. She was eating yogurt and scrambled eggs Sunday through Monday then refused to eat those things as well as her food or any scratch Tuesday. I hadn't seen her drink much water until Tuesday when she drank a lot at one time. She would only eat greens from my garden. Kale and sugar snap peas. I cut these things up pretty small for her. Today the only thing she will eat are the greens and peas. I tried some oatmeal with quinoa and amaranth ( what I eat) but she wasn't interested in that, only the greens. After she ate a fair amount of greens I sat and watched her and she started a very strange neck behavior, See vids. After watching this for 5 mins or so I massaged her neck and throat and it seems to have stopped. Her crop feels normal not big(walnut sized) and feels like seeds in it, it isn't soft nor hard. Her poop is green and kinda watery(pic sorry). Its not been about an hour since the neck action and there hasn't been anymore. Is it possible some greens were stuck and it was a case of throat/crop adjusting? I am so concerned about her and stressed out. Any help would be appreciated. I feel I am doing all I can and would like to feel that I am on the right track here so I can get some rest. There are no vets in the area that treat chickens. I do have a vet scheduled to come do a herd check and yearly booster for my goats on the 26th so if shes still ailing by then, they can have a look at her but that is the soonest I can get any vet help. She doesn't seem to be in pain, she takes little walks around my studio, but mostly returns to her kennel to sleep. She seems very content to rest in there or in my lap.

It would be bood to see the right eyeball again in a clear picture. The neck movement does look like she is adjusting her crop, but sometimes neck movements can be neurological symptoms. Did you feel anything stuck in her crop when she was doung the neck movement? Does she have poultry granite grit available to eat when she needs it? I would stop the breens and anything other than moist or dry chicken feed, and perhaps a few scrambled egg bits. Feel her crop again first thing in the morning when it should be empty.
