I sell eggs for hatching. If I counted the amount of time I spend getting that next buyer, i'm really loosing alot of $$$. But they do mostly pay for themselves. Nobody I know want bantam eggs for eating. It takes to many of them. So when it's too cold to send eggs I usually hatch them myself and make my picks out of the older ones in the spring and sell, trade or give away.
Now counting all the feed I use during those months I don't sell eggs, i'm using more feed for the chicks and they don't pay for themselves. So no profit here. This year there won't be a winter hatching. Feed has doubled in costs and we moved and didn't have time to get proper housing for the youngsters to be warm thru winter. The ones I'm hatching now will be wintering on our porch.
Then with silkies, when spring hits and people are back to hatching my girls usually decide to take a vacation. As long as I don't count the electricity, water, wood shavings for chicks, paper towel, cleaning supplies. They pay for their feed. But count that all in and it's a loss.
Thats just for my little hobby. Oh, and I have no idea how many I have. I'm afraid to count. DH might find out.
