Hey everybody,
My father was curious if anybody out there could help us with the cleaning of the inside of the coop. My father (who is rather "old school" ) said that when he was younger, his grandma used to make him clean the coop with PineSol and water. I was thinking there has to be a safer and more "green" way to clean the coop. He regularly changes the pine bedding or whatever he uses (sorry) and wants to know how to safely clean the inside of the coop and what you guys use to do so. We live in CT, so also for the East Coast people, how do you clean it effectively in the winter months?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Desiree--

If it worked for grandma, it should work for now-a-days. On the other hand.... there is a product called Oxine that is an anti bacterial, anti viral cleaner that can be sprayed in the coop. It is used by commercial operations in combination with other chemicals...but for the back yard flock it is used alone. First state vet supply www.firststatevetsupply.com has it.

Depending upon the reason for cleaning--- between flocks? Get rid of pests, just normal chicken maintenance, disinfect after disease outbreak....etc. May influence your approach. And part of your approach may be influenced by the type of coop - wood, metal, plastic, stone etc. that he has.....

I don't know how green Oxine is...but if it kills virus and bacterial threats to the chickens...then I think it is a good thing.

Someone told me she cleans hers with white vinegar and water, which is supposed to kill all kinds of stuff. She then sprinkles with DE and puts the new shavings down. I've heard that vinegar is an organic alternative to chemical antibacterial cleaners and a good weed killer, too.

Let us know if you use it and it works.

i just disinfected mine with Vinegar... I didn't water it down and other then the coop smelling like vinegar for 2 days it seems to work well. I didn't want to use bleach or anything chemical. We didn't have any major issues so we weren't trying to "kill" any bacteria or anything. I'm happy with it so far.
