We need some diagnostic help. After buying some 5 chickens from a local vendor, we have lost one after another to a disease. The chickens are in good health and then become unsteady on their feet and develop a greenish-whitish diarrhea. The unsteadiness progresses to paralysis. There are no respiratory symptoms and, right until the end, the chicken is in no apparent distress, with a good appetitive. Eventually, they become unable to stand or walk.

My best guess is that this is Marek’s disease. But the vendor says all her chickens are healthy and this is a new coop on a new farm.

Any help would be much appreciated.

so so sorry to say yes it defiantly does sound like Mareks! did you have time to vaccinate against it or they brand new? you will have to disinfect everything to the best of your ability and if you bring in new ones vaccinate them before if possible or immediately. i believe it takes some time After vaccines are given for protection to occur. you can get the vaccine online for only 19.00. i just received mine today. i got my vaccine from first state vet. i have heard of people vaccinating in the face of out break. you might want to consult with a doctor about this. i know first state vet has a online doctor you can consult with for a small fee. this is very serious and you NEED to consult with the doctor because there is soooo much MIS information regarding Mareks online and going about. some is just plain wrong! the reason i say i know vaccine has been used in the face of outbreak is from MY OWN consultation with a vet. so please don't rely on misinformation and talk to a chicken vet. if you don't know of one like i said First State Vet has Dr. Peter Brown otherwise known as "the chicken doctor". he can advise you on the best disinfection process and where or what to do from here. its very much worth the small fee of 25 dollars for the CORRECT information and help. i got a consult for my vaccine and it was extremely helpful! like i said too much misinformation going around and this is too important to get wrong information on. i URGE you to seek professional advice from a chicken doctor for the health of your land and future flocks! this is a highly contagious airborne disease that only a professional is suited for advice on. do this for your future and for your neighbors flocks as well! This is the Best Advice i can give. please seek professional opinion! i wish you the very best! good luck

Welcome to BYC, sorry your chicks are sick. Your best guess is probably correct. If you're in the US, many states offer a free or low cost necropsy service for backyard flocks.

And it's not limited to just info on Marek's. Please, don't get me started, lol. And do me a favor, if you ever see me posting wrong info, let me know and I'll fix it!
