I just purchased 4 month old speckled sussex chickens. I noticed that three of them had weird shaped eyes. I blew it off then i noticed that their eyes became watery and red. They do seem a little raspy but nothing major sounding. No running nose no fowl smell nothing im stumped. They are eating drinking and running around like nothing is wrong. I finally isolated them and started them on oxytetracycline powder and terrmyicine ointment for their eyes. Its been 2 days now they were medicated and i dont think its doing anything. If anyone knows what it could be i would be gratefull. I really dont want to put them in with my girls and get them sick. Its a tough call for me. Let me know what you guys think.

Any new chickens should be quaratined for at least 30 days, just to rule out an infectious disease. Respiratory diseases can be viruses or bacterial, and some are fungal. Only bacterial diseases will respond to antibiotics. Many diseases including MG, coryza, and ILT can make carriers of your flock. I would either take them back, or get them tested. Here is a good article that lists the diseases above, along with symptoms: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Here's pic of them no foam pus or bubbles eyes just seem watery and red.

I just left the cet with one of my hens. I took her in because she had a discharge from one of her eyes but that has stopped but that tissue around her eye was still red and swollen. Vet says its fowl pox. The pics look similar to her eye. Something to consider. My girl is eating and drinking and laying fine. Definitely keep them isolated from any healthy birds. Good luck.

Thanks. How are you gonna treat her. What medicines, or you going to cull. I mean if I can't put them with the other hens I really have no point of having them. I hate illnesses it's too much stress.

Fowl pox is similar to human version of chicken pox. Just has to run its course. Vet gave me some silvadene cream to apply topically. Not going to cull. I have 6 hens and so far only 1 has it. If all the birds start showing signs I'll just let them hang together till it runs its course. But i would definitely get an opinion as to what it is for sure. Chicken diseases seem to show themselves in the same symptoms. Hard to tell what you got for sure.

Yeah I don't have any black spots on comb but they don't have much of a comb anyway I'll still give them anibiotics till the end 0f the week. I'll just give it time. Good luck with yours thanks

Your welcome. Mine have small combs too and the affected hen doesnt have any spots on hers either. Actually she doesnt have any. Good luck.

Can you check into getting them tested by the state vet or your local extension agent? That way you would know if what is causing the eyes to swell and water, is MG or something else.
