Howdy everyone! I came home to a terrible sight. I had 5 dead Light sussex in my pen. These are about 1 to 2 months old. Nothing has changed with their eating habits. They were put out about 2 weeks ago with the others that are still alive. There are a few more chicks in there that are acting very lathargic. There is still a heat lamp there for them to use at any time. The only thing different is my husband put some grass clippings in there last night. This the first time we have ever had anything like this happen to the numerous chicks that we have hatched.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? We still do have about 20 chicks in that particular pen and hope not to lose anymore.

Feeding grass clippings to any animal can be dangerous if they are wilted or have started to mold. You might want to clean any left over clippings out of their pen. Good luck !
