Help With Injured Saxony Duck

Hello everyone,

One of my ducks, a Saxony, suffered some kind of injury, presumably from a predator, while roaming this afternoon/evening. I didn’t see it happen, but I have photos of the injuries I will share.

The nearest vet hospital that takes ducks is almost an hour away, and I’m not sure what I can best do for her. I’ve cleaned the injury site with wound spray, and am doing my best to stop the bleeding— in fact, my son is actually writing this for me while I do so. Any advice on how to help her would be much appeciated.

It’s hard to tell, but it appears that they’ve stopped bleeding, at least.

The gash on the left is fairly deep it seems, and surely a puncture wound. She is not interested in drinking and seems as though she is in shock. But breathing and resting now.

Good you stopped the bleeding and sprayed with wound spray, now treat for shock.
Put her in a crate in a warm dark quiet place . Give electrolyte water. You can use plain Pedialyte. They sell it at Walmart or you can use a poultry formula. If you have it there are powdered electrolyte formulas you mix in the water follow the directions. Or you can even make your own:
for each one cup of water you add 1 teaspoon of sugar.1/8 tsp salt . 1/8 tsp baking soda.

After she is settled in her warm, dark quiet place with her electrolyte water dish in front of her, we can think about starting her on an antibiotic for the puncture wound. Do you have any on hand?

Thank you so much for your wisdom and help! I have exactly one of the Electrolyte packages left for poultry - that will be good right? Just hope she will drink it so far she’s shown no interest at all.

I think once she’s settled in her quiet place she will try it. If you don’t have a crate, you can even use a box or a laundry basket with a towel over the top. And clip it on with clothespins or something. And I would use puppy pee pads and/or a towel underneath her as well.

I do not have any antibiotics on hand but do have Neosporin.
