So we r building a new coop. I got the chicken math fever lol and I'm not sure how I should divide up the coop for maximum space. We have a 16x8 coop I will have 11 hens and 1 rooster of standard size and I also have 10 silkies but I don't know how many are roosters as they are just babies right now. 6 weeks. I also would like to have some storage as well with a slop sink if possible. I do not want to put the littles in with the bigs as I'm afraid they may get hurt. If anyone can give us some pointers I would really appreciate it. Also they will all have nest boxes that I can access from the outside so they will not be taking up any room

Your coop, if used just for housing, would comfortably hold about 32 hens - generally you want to plan on about 4 square feet of floor space per adult standard bird (silkies could use a little less, maybe around 3 square feet). You could split off two 8x6 sections (48 square feet each, enough for 12 standard fowl), and that would leave you with a 4x8 section for storage.

My parents had a chicken house of that was also 8' deep x 16' wide (come to think of it......they still do, but no longer used for chickens). The east half was setup for adult birds, with roosts, nest boxes, etc. The west half was left open inside, and was used as a brooder for baby chicks as needed. One door on the outside. The divider wall had a similar access door that connected the two on the inside. When not seeing duty as a brooder, the west part was used for storage of feed, etc. You could probably do something similar but dividing it as 1/3:2/3 or even 1/4:3/4 vs. half&half.

Thank u so much for your ideas I really appreciate it. I have a hard time envisioning how things could be so I am thankful for your help

It is 8 ft tall the door is 6 ft wide. It was free and towards the end of the long side. There is also a window 3 ft wide on the same wall. There are also Windows on each side of the coop 30 inches wide. I will try to get a pic of it when I get home
