My chicks are getting so big!! Just finished building their coop and it's about time for them to move out into it. Like I said before I really have no clue about chickens and took these in from one of my student's family who was moving. Can anyone tell me the breed or if they think they are hens or roosters? Thanks!!

Hello and welcome to BYC! That was a great thing you did by volunteering to take on something you had no knowledge of. Try posting your pictures here, https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this. Also to help you understand what you have gotten yourself into, our learning center has some great articles on just about everything, here is the link, https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. Here is a helpful link to managing your new flock, https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/2/managing-your-flock. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to BYC!

Very cute birds!! I don't know the breeds or sexes of these birds. It may be a bit early to tell gender yet. But Basskids has left you with the link to the What Breed and Gender section.

Enjoy your new birds and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Basskids08 has left you with some nice links to check out. Nice of you to offer the chicks a home, good luck with your flock.

The black speckled one with the white spot could be either a Barred Rock or a Black Australorp, the tan or buff colored one looks like a Buff Orpington chick. If the black speckled one is what I think you can be certain it is a chicken not a roo. The brown speckled one looks a lot like a Wellsummer. But, without clearer pics of the others it is very hard to tell. I agree you will have to wait & see what they grow into.

Cute chicks! Have fun with them - chicken raising is a great hobby!

I don't know about the lighter ones, but I'm pretty sure the black/white speckled one is a pullet Barred Rock. I raised them for about 6 years when in high school, and all our hens looked like that when they were little.
