HELP WITH MY GOAT!!!!

Our grumpy old dog managed to get in the goat pen and attacked a doeling. He savaged her neck and shoulders. No hanging flesh, just shallow gashes.THANK GOD dh was out there when it happened or I know she would be dead. The dog is no longer with us....

We brought her in and I cleaned her up in the tub. Then I used the clippers to shave the chewed areas. Lastly I flushed the wounds with povidine/iodine antiseptic. Is there anything else I can/should do? A vet call is not even feasible. Should I worry about her dying from the shock/stress? Can I give her something for pain?

Childrens motrin in the same doseage you would give your child,(go by the bottle), pedialyte to keep her hydrated if you have it, or a weak sugar water solution. Watch for infection, neosporin on the bites, do not bandage, let them air dry and keep them clean. SOOO sorry about the attack.

Also, in Central Texas, be mindful of screwflies and proudflesh, so you might want to keep her in and make sure you keep an extra close eye on those wounds, any sign of infection, you need to get to the feed store and get some penicillian in a tiny, tiny dose or some sulfa wound powder that will help to keep the bugs and infection out of the injuries. Keep the injuries clean and dry, and keep her hydrated. I grew up in Texas and had to treat a horse for screwflies and proudflesh, and I would rather eat roadkill with a spoon than to go through that again, so be vigiliant, it has a sickly sweet smell and the edges out the wounds will look greyish pink, its hard to miss.

I'm so sorry to hear about you goat, I wish I could help but I have had very little experience with goats.

All I can say is try to keep the wounds clean so they don't get infected watch for signs of excessive drainage or heat around the wounds.

Watch for signs of shock or other things like dehydration. Pay close attention to her eating, drinking, and eliminating habits and that her droppings are normal.

Also keep an eye on her behavior, like if she becomes lethargic or is always laying down, or having trouble walking or standing.

Maybe try some online vet sites for some info.

That Blukote or any of those"blue" sprays will help keep the flys out. Is she still suckling? She needs to be with momma if she is.

you did an excellent job so far... has she had a tetnus shot, i'd also put her on some antibiotics. u can get both from tractor supply, cheaper than the vet.

Thank you everyone for your responses. I think I might have some blu-kote - is that better or as good as anything else I could get to keep the flies out of the wounds? Poor little thing is very traumatized and her right front leg is so very sore. No, she is no longer a nursling - she is right at 4 months old. Upon further inspection the dog had also attacked our little buckling but there was only a couple of minorgashes and 1 puncture so the little dude got doctored up too.

The dog was shot and buried. He has been on our "list" for a while now as he was getting meaner and meaner - we were afraid he would eventually bite one of us or the kids (he was to the point he would growl at us if we ticked him off). So, he just earned a sooner rather than later end.

Augie is spot on about the tetnus shot, sorry I didnt think of that one, I was writing paper and took a break and spotted your posting. With little goats just always think of them like one of your own kids, they are very similiar according to my Navajo goat guru, and considering he has been raising goats his whole life, and saved my babies lives, I trust him. I can usually get info from him during the day, so if you have questions, shoot me a line and I can give him a call tomorrow. Blukote is good stuff, use it, but watch out how much you use and make sure she doesnt react to it. If she does have any kind of allergic reaction, you can give childrens benadryl in the same dosage as the childrens motrin.
Sorry about the dog, had one go sour like that on my sis and her family, on it cost her over 12k because he bit a neighbor kid before her ex shot him. Watch the punctures on that little boy goat, use a syringe and flush that hole out real good with some antiseptic.
