Help with roosts

How far from the wall do roosts need to be for large standard hens? 1ft?

mine are 12 inches from the wall and 10 inches apart. They all seem to enjoy huddling together.

Mine are a foot off of the wall (to the center of the 2x4), and they seem to fit just fine either facing out, or facing the wall - which I can't understand wanting to do
