My DN caught a skunk in his trap. He tried to put a trap over it but it sprayed and chased him off, LOL. How do you handle a skunk in a trap? He says he can't get close enought to it to shoot it. We live in a neighborhood.

The rain gear I no longer want has lasted through at least 4 skunk releases. I put on the gear, and walk backwards toward the trap and open it. Skunk walks off, I walk back in the house. Skunks don't bother my chickens. Now I just tell hubby to not bait the stupid trap! Our coop is secure.

I've read of people that have a trapped skunk just going about their daily activities in the yard to get the skunk accustomed to people being around. Eventually they become approachable and can be released. Since this one sprayed it is probably in a feisty and cantankerous mood.

You may put some antihistamines in some jelly with bread and toss it to the skunk. It will get hungry eventually. My mom gave my dads Labrador retriever some Tylenol PM once thinking that it was Tylenol arthritis. It made him quite lethargic. The antihistamines might knock it out enough for someone to release the catch to the trap.

I personally like skunks. They are usually not aggressive for obvious reasons.

<chuckle> But sometimes antihistamines can act just the opposite and have a "speed" like effect on people. Nothing like a hyped up, agitated skunk on your hands!

Best wishes on the release!

We called animal control last time he caught one. He was able to move that from the pasture to the front without it spraying. They euthanized it on the spot due to rabies in our area. This one who couldn't move to front since it spryed. we really don't want animal control in the pasture to see chickens, rooster, ducks, geese and 4 dogs. He now is working on one of my big plastic clothes storage containers (which he dumped all the clothes out of) to try and put over the cage. I am sorry to say he plans on shooting it. We are tired of our dogs getting sprayed in the middle of the night. I know it the stupid dogs fault but I won't let him shoot the dogs. I'll let you know how the hold in plastic container trick goes.
