I just found out my hen has a big hole on her right side from our rooster.I was needing to know what to use to clean the wound? How to go about stitching her up,or what to put on it?She is our first chicken we ever got and she means the world to us.So far the wound dont seem to be bothering her and she isnt bleeding real bad.Just want to get her healed up.Any help appreciated.

Same thing just happened here! Smoky, one of the blue Orps, has the same thing, really bad. You need some Betadine and dilute it by half (I think). Flush the wound with that and remove dead tissue, carefully. We used scissors for that. Fill the wound with Neosporin ointment and if you can, a piece of gauze over it to soak up the draining fluids would be good, but its hard to tape it unless the feathers are cut/plucked. She has to be separated like we did Smoky. Suede's spurs are now cut to 1" and blunted. They don't show pain much so it's easy to miss! We pulled the skin up and tacked it to the top skin with two stitches, though one came out. It does need to drain, so I would not stitch her up all the way.

Kevin, one thing Cyn left out is that we are injecting ours with 1/2 cc of Penicillin G per day for 3 days for infection.

Welcome to byc. Your babies I got from you and cyn are growing great. One of the BR. is a male. Sometime soon I will get a new picture for you and cyn. I think the blue is going to be a big girl. There is no comb growth at all. I will name her Maxine. Jean
