One of my Peking ducks was attacked by a fox on Sunday. She has three holes in her back which we are currently treating with betadine and antibacterial cream. However she has not has an easy go. We did not find her to late Sunday night at which point she was covered in flies. To our misfortune they laid eggs in her wounds so all day Monday and Tuesday we spent washing maggots out of her wounds. Now, Wednesday, she has no more maggots, but she has a breathing issue. She laid down all day Sunday-Tuesday. she hobbles around today (yes she hobbles and uses her wings for balance). But after moving a foot or do she breathes heavily through her mouth and once in awhile will cough. Laying down for a minute or two will ease her mouth breathing. Any thoughts about what could be causing her labored breathing?

She could have internal injuries. Also, check her vent for maggots. She needs to be in, away from flies.

Maybe there is a systemic infection starting, from the wounds. I would start her on antibiotics.

If it is possible, a good duck vet could help you. I understand that sometimes that is not possible. But if you can, do, right away.

Clip the feathers away from the edges of her wounds. Check again around her vent for more punctures, and under her wings.

Give her some vitamins with electrolytes, to boost her system.

Keep her in where it's safe and quiet. Get her into a tub of lukewarm water so you can observe her closely, and that is something that usually cheers ducks up anyway.

Talk to her, try to encourage her.
