I think I need help from all of you knowledgeable chicken people! My 22 week old GLWyandotte laid her first egg on Labor Day and it was a shell less egg laid from the roost and broken on the poop board. The next egg she laid was four days later and then another one two days after that, both normal. Since then she pooped out a broken yolk and a white and then did not lay another egg until five days later and she must have laid it from the roost, looked normal but broken on the poop board along with another broken yolk. There was egg yolk and egg white coming out of her vent. I saw one of the chickens running around with the membrane and I saw egg white on the ground. The other chickens were eating it. I gave her another bath and also broke up a Tums and gave it to her. I don’t know what to do, I am scared she is going to get an internal infection. Is there anything else I should be doing? From everything I have read about this it seems like it is a death sentence! I know she is young and just starting to lay, so just wondering if things will straighten out? She seems fine and is eating very well, running around, but I did notice that her poops have seemed very small lately.

Clearly if she lays normal eggs sometimes then her anatomy is OK, so IMO it would appear to be just beginner's issues as you surmise. As long as she continues to seem fine and eat well, I'd just hang in there and try not to worry. And remember there are far fewer threads about the non-emergency cases; salpingitis isn't a death sentence - I have a perfectly healthy hen laying large eggs despite having that following a nasty prolapse in the spring

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I hope she will be OK, I just feel something is not right since she only has had 3 normal eggs and the rest have been soft shell or just yolk and egg white running out of her vent. I have had to give her 3 baths this week because of the mess on her backside.

What are you feeding her? Do your girls have access to Oyster Shells?
Sounds like a "young" layer with reproductive issue ... Give her some Calcium Citrate w/D3, Calcium Carbonate w/D3 or even Tums , a warm bath to clean up is good.
Thanks so much for your response. I was feeding them organic starter crumbles until about a couple weeks ago and now I am feeding them organic layer crumbles. I never see her take any oyster shell. My BCMarans is always pecking it, I thought she would never even lay an egg since she is blind in one eye and use to be lowest in the pecking order, but she has been laying a egg a day! I hope that things straighten out with my Wyandotte, this situation has me a little worried. They eat lots of stuff out of my garden and treats so hopefully that is not upsetting their nutritional balance.

Less treats .... I've learned that treats does affect the nutritional balance of the balance feed  It's been said they should not get more than 10% of their feed in treats. My girls weight was lower than should be, informed by BYC Members about treats vs feed. I stopped all treats (veggies, fruits, scratch, BOSS, etc) just fed them their fermented feed & when I close them up (their confined to their enclosure) I toss 1/8 cup dry feed & 1/8 cup freeze dried mealworms. They're up to what they should be, it was recommended to get a fecal test done which I would have done had they not gained any weight.

As for the Oyster Shells, the hens will eat as they need, it's best to keep it available. I don't see mine eating it but it goes down so they must be ;)

Thank you everybody for all the information! Update two weeks later on what is going on with my girls! Everybody is laying now except for one and my Wyandotte is laying beautiful thick shelled eggs and has not had any problems for over a week and a half!
Ugh... I spoke too soon! I went out to the coop this morning and there was a softshell egg laying on the poop board along with egg yolk and egg white! So it must have been two eggs since the membrane of one of the eggs was not broken. Oh well!
