I know this might be a very stupid question but I am at wits end. So I have 3 RIR which are about 5 months old. My boyfriend brought home a much older hen who is laying about 4 eggs a week. I have been watching the RIR grow and and tring to find the subtle differences in their wattles and combs. Long story short, the two that I am pretty certain are roosters mounted the older hen and the one that I was more than certain was a hen jumped on her too and tried to mount. I'm not ready to accept I have 3 Roos so could it be that the smaller RIR was just doing monkey see monkey do??? And she could be a hen just acting up??

Sincerely
Nicole

Hi,

Maybe if you post photos it would help, but if they are mating with the older hen (and she is accepting of them), i would suggest they are all boys! Sorry!!

No questions are stupid.... if ya don't know, ya gotta ask!

At 5 months old the difference between cockerel and pullet should be pretty apparent.
Long pointy hackle(around neck) and saddle(growing down sides from in front of tail) feathers.

Agrees that posting pics of all 3 birds would settle the matter pretty quickly.
Good side shots of whole bodies as close and clear as possible would be the best.

Hi, Newbie here, this may be a stupid question..its pouring rain and my chickens are not going in their coop have four hens given by mu husbands co worker three are 5 or 6 months? They are just starting to lay. The older one is their mother. Advice?

Quote: Mine sometimes don't go in right away, I kind of think they like it lol.

OP, post some pics and I'm sure someone can help you identify roos versus hens. I only had one RIR (not intentional) and he was a little jerk (I hear not all are, mine was though).

Hi... Thank you. The one rir who I'm almost positive is a roo is very friendly. He is the first one to jump in my lap at night in the coop. I will try and post some pics

Hi,

Just let them be - mine do the same even during the heaviest downpours - silly things!

BTW - there's no such thing as a stupid question!

Still learning how to post pics.. This is Isabella.. My older hen but does anyone know what breed? Someone said BR... But I don't think so. She lays about 5 a week.
