HELP!

You should remove the sick chicken immediately and quarantine it. Disinfect the entire coop and all feeders/waterers. If it is Mareks it will continue to spread until you bleach everything down.

I secluded her from the rest of my flock this evening. I disinfected the entire run/coop with vinegar. I guess I’ll have to go back and disinfect with bleach, but I was worried that would be harmful to the chickens. The sick chicken has started tremoring her head and not able to hold her head up right. I also went ahead and gave all of my birds dewormer, a trace mineral/vitamin concoction for poultry, and probios. I also dusted with and surrounding areas as well as run and coop with poultry dust. I’m praying my others make it. I’m so sad about this!! :hit:hit:hit

as long as you give ample time for the bleach to burn off you will be fine. standard grocery store bleach is fairly low concentration, you can make your own bleach super strong by going to a pool supply place and buying powdered chlorine and mixing an entire bag into a gallon of hot water. DO NOT BREATHE THE FUMES, buy a cheap spray bottle from a discount/dollar store for this use, it will only last one use anyways at the concentrations you will be mixing this too. spray away, let sit 2 hours then hose out with water and let dry. this is your best bet to kill EVERYTHING

EDIT: the bags can be supplimented by chlorine tablets for floating chlorinators and crush the tablets to a powder before putting into the water

Thank you for the info! I’ll be doing that today. I checked on my chicken this morning and she didn’t make it. :(:hit

Update on my flock. I’m preparing myself to lose my entire flock. I’ve deep cleaned and disinfected EVERYTHING the chickens touch with bleach, but I have another girl come up sick today. She’s wobbly and shakey, not eating....I’m beside myself. I know this virus can live in th ground for quiet sometime and if I do have any birds that survive they will forever be carriers. My question is, how long do I need to wait before starting over with new birds? Is there anything I can drench the run and surrounding areas, coop and all with to kill the virus?

viruses are airborne, URI can travel over 100 miles. if neighbors have chickens you know of this may be a cause of the illness.

if you have the ability, move the coop to fresh ground, go buy a bunch of gallon bottles of white vinegar and a backpack sprayer if you dont have one, mix 2 parts vinegar to 1 part water and a splash of liquid dishwasher detergent (this doesnt foam like hand soaps or laundry detergents) saturate the ground as much as you can where they spend the most time, under and around where the coop was, and under/around where the coop will be.

prepare for some dead weeds, lay cardboard down over super saturated areas for 2 hours so they dont injest the mixture (unsure if harmful to chickens) and hope for the best.

prepare for a full loss, if a careless neighbors anywhere in your area have sick birds there is nothing you can do but hope for the best. if close neighbors have chickens, go knocking on doors and see if they have simmilar issues.

have you treated for worms yet?

when re acquiring new birds. make sure they dont skimp out on vaccinations and ask as many questions as you can and have them show the data sheet for vaccinations done to the new chicks. often times places will say they are vaccinated and wont be,

you say the bird that died was 3 months, have you had that orpington the entire time and it just now showed symptoms?

Yes, all the birds that have died and the one that is now sick, I have had them all since they were 2 days old. I bought them from a local feed store that told me they had been vaccinated. I will never buy from a feed store again. I will only buy from reputable local hatcheries or well known hatcheries online.

Sorry, I accidentally replied to the wrong comment. That was to your other comment. But as far as moving the coop, I can’t. It’s huge and cemented into the ground. I wormed them all with safeguard last Friday and will be working again this Friday. I’m so sick over this. My neighbor across from me has chickens and he just mentioned the other day that he had lost 6 or his 12 chickens. Our neighbor next door to him have chickens too. I know myself and the neighbor next to him take very good care of our birds and their environment. I’m not so sure about him. We do have lots of wild birds around here too.
