HELP!

my first thing i would do is knock on unknown neighbors door and ask if hes lost chickens. this seems to be a area/zone epidemic as the other neighbor has lost birds as well. you can call the department of agriculture to have them come and do an airborne test and test the ground in unknown neighbors yard because of the epidemic. means all birds in a huge area are sick which is cause for concearn as that means this could be up to 1k miles or more are affected due to this

@Duck’nChickMama_2243 I'm very sorry for your loss. Putting your location in your profile can be helpful when we give you suggestions.

I do recommend that if you lose any more chicks that you send the body to your state diagnostic lab for testing. This is the only way to know what is causing the death of your birds. We can help you find that information if you'd like.

The symptoms you describe could be caused by a number of things. You mention one bird with a swollen eye, but no respiratory symptoms period. All seem to have had trembling and keeping the head down, correct? While what you have could be the result of Marek's disease, you may want to have a fecal float or treat for Coccidiosis. There is no cure for Marek's, so there is no treatment, but there are other illnesses and conditions that can look very similar. Get some Corid at your local feed store and begin treatment.

Thank you so much! I’ll add my location to my profile! I’m new here so still learning.:D I’m in southeast Texas. I did contact my local extension office. I’m waiting on Texas A&M to contact me for further treatment/advice. Thank you so much.

And yes you’re correct. Those are the correct symptoms.

It's great you are contacting someone so you can get some answers. At this point testing is your best bet.

I'm very sorry that you have lost chicks. I hope the others get better soon.

one of my newly discovered cockerels (prior i thought he was a she) left leg shakes pretty badly when standing still but before his back got ripped open he was totally fine so i attribute some of that to the injury

Update! So, I finally heard back from Texas A&M poultry science prof. Basically he said, sometimes chickens just die for no reason it seems or it could’ve potentially been botulism. He also said that Marek’s is very rare. In order to get a definitive answer, my best bet would be to contact TAMU bet lab and see about having a necropsy done.
