Help!

My chickens have always been messy with a “regular” waterer so I bought a 5 gallon bucket with watering cups(4). It releases water when I press the yellow thing towards the bucket but when I simply press down it only lets out a very small amount of water. My chickens will drink from the cups but can’t refill it. Is this normal? How do I fix this? Attached are pictures of my waterer

They refill it by pressing the yellow thing. There are tips for teaching them. Hopefully someone will chime in or you can do a search.

Pick them up and push it with their beaks ....

I hate those waterers! So convenient for us but a pain for hens , I like my girls to get a big gulp of cold water not drips ( nipples? Don’t get me started!!)

This is what I use, sure I have to clean it every week ,but that’s my job

Use a red sharpie marker to put a dot on the spot they need to press. That will sometimes draw their attention. If you want, try it on just one to start and see what happens.

I’ll try picking them up, thanks! I don’t particularly love the cups or nipples but one of my chickens(13? Weeks old) sits on the waterer and poops in it. I was cleaning it(and still am until this is figured out!) 3x a day.
