Hoping someone can help. This is my 4 year old RIR Roo. He has always been healthy until last week. He started to limp, and within 24 hrs couldn’t stand on the leg anymore. It looks like he lost a claw & it got infected, & the main pad was swollen & he’d holler when I touched it. I cleaned it with saline, got in there with a brush, then applied some neosporin & wrapped it for 48 hours & put him I a crate to rest. The swelling in the pad is down, & he doesn’t mind when I press on it. But he can’t put any weight on it still. At the same time, his comb has begun to rot. No idea if the 2 are related, such as a heart problem that manifests in the extremities.

Any ideas? My birds are all free ranged by day, and have a clean, dry coop. It’s been a warm winter so it ain’t frostbite. Pox? Cholera? All the other birds including 2 other roosters are healthy & happy. I’ve put him on Amoxicillin just in case, but any suggestions are appreciated!

Where are you located in the world?
What does it look like in between that back toe and the foot?
Is vet care an option for you?

If possible, I would use Chlorhexidine to soak and clean the foot. Dry well and re-apply your ointment, re-wrap.

Do you have any antibiotics on hand?

The comb, what have your temperatures been like?
You mention it's rotting - does it have an odor?

Hello. Thanks for the reply. I’m in rural SE Virginia. I’ll have to check the area you referenced. I’ll get the Chlorhexidine at TSC & give it a try. I’m giving him amoxicillin now. The weather has been warmer than average, with no freezing days for over a month or more. I didn’t notice an odor on the comb, but will check closer. I did notice a foul odor on the wrapping I pulled of his foot after 48 hours, but can’t say whether that’s from wound rot or just because anything left on the foot of a rooster for 2 days would smell bad.

What does of Amoxicillin are you using?
If you are noticing an odor when unwrapping the foot, I would have to assume it's infected.
I would give him daily soaks in the Chlorhexidine. Changing the wrapping daily as well. Keep him on clean dry bedding.
