I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this or not........I have a sick hen. I found her laying on the bottom of the coop about 10 mins. ago. I have brought her in the house and right now shes sitting in my kitchen sink. Her vent area had diarreah on it (she actually pooped on me on the way to the house-very runny) she is unresponsive, but slightly alert. When you walk near her she will open her eyes, but makes no attempt to get away(she is a partridge chantechler-sp??). None of my birds showed any signs of problems yesterday, and today she is the only one with issues. Could she be egg-bound? Everyone also looked alright about an hour ago. Please help, I have no idea what to do but I don't want to loose her!!!!

I should have added that I have felt around her abdomen and felt no lumps-she is soaking in my sink in some warm water just in case she is egg-bound and to remove any diarreah............

Well, I just lost my first chicken:hit, that really sucked. And it was all too fast. She actually looked like she was perking up, she was drinking a little water. Then she threw up the little bit of water she had drank and that was that. Could it have been something she had ate in our yard(all of our birds are free range)? I'm really hoping that it isn't something that is going to spread to the rest of my flock. I really don't think I could do that again. Everyone else looks fine, they are scratching and eating and drinking. Well, everyone except for our big red roo who is calling and calling and calling for his girl who won't be coming back:(. I am sorry for your loss... and for your roo's loss as well!

I gave her a good once over before I disposed of her, and on one of her feet it looked like one of her toenails was missing. In it's place was something that resembled a big hard scab (almost like a brown kernel of corn). Could this have been the cause of her death? If so, what could have caused it? The rest of her foot looked normal, no swelling, no discoloring, just the one funky toe. Thank you everyone for the well wishes, now I'd just like to figure out the COD. I have also gone out and caught a few of our other birds and examined them, everyone appears to be in perfect health, all eating, no foot issues, feathers in great shape, no bugs, and I've gotten 6 eggs already today. I am quite new to chickens so I'm no expert on the diseases and illnesses they can get, but thats why I come to you guys. Please advise chicken gurus!!!!! Thanks.....

I am sorry for your loss.....I'm really not sure about the toenail.
Not familiar, with that causing a death...unless it was infected...and the symptoms weren't apparent until NOW<

I AM SO SORRY for your loss.

How long have they been free-ranging in your yard? If it's been more than a few months, it seems they would have sampled all the plants to be had, and not been bothered. If it's a relatively new thing for them to free-range, you might check around once more for chemicals or poisonous plants. But could a snake have bit her? I assume you don't have scorpions there, but you must have some nasty critters.

You could have a necropsy done on her to determine the cause of death, I THINK. It cost someone $10, I read earlier. I've never had one done, though.

I sure am sorry you had to go through this.
