Help!!!!!!!!!!

Perhaps it might be better to have a chat with your dad, and explain that you would be very unhappy to butcher this particular flock, and that it would be more viable to raise meat birds for butchering as opposed to laying hens......I hope he listens to your reasoning... importantly don't get annoyed when you put your points across.....good luck and let us all know what he finally decides...

The chickens are a mixture of Roosters and Hens and they havn't started laying yet (hes only gonna butcher the roosters). oh yeah and I forgot to say, they are New Hampshire Reds. and I raised'em from chicks and got very attached so its not gonna be the best. And I know that this will sound stupid but I have this fear that I'm betraying them in some way... : (

Nothing you have said sounds "stupid". You shouldn't be so hard on yourself.

I don't know how old you are so excuse me if this sounds like I'm talking down to you......

Too many roosters will hurt your hens. While you may feel remorse for having to butcher the roo's you are really doing your flock a favor. Right now your birds are young and not too aggressive, but in the next couple of months your roo's will start to fight for the "top roo" spot AND they will start tearing into your girls. No more than one roo for 10 hens and in my personal experience with my particular birds I think 2 roos for my 39 hens would have been fine. If I want to breed a pair I could always pen them for higher % fertile eggs.

Call your local feed stores and see if they will buy your roo's. Sometimes they will trade them for feed instead of cash....maybe that is something to check out but don't get your heart set on it.

You need to let him know that those birds are not gonna feed a family. Unless they are meat birds, there is little meat on them. It's not trying to convince him not, this is fact. He will be disaapointed.

I like the Idea of selling them to a feed store... I havn't talked to my dad yet cuz hes been pretty busy. I know how bad it can be for the hens to have too many roosters cuz in are old flock I had to roos for 10 hens and... it was pretty bad. Thanks for your help!
