I have had 2 chickens die in 2 days..maybe heat? It was high 90's and low 100's..coop is in full sun..they have plenty of food, water and they get all of our table scraps..I do not believe they were egg bound..2 in 2 days would be strange wouldn't it? We are very new at this (3-4 months) the other ones did appear to be panting and were a little bit lethargic but they were all fine this morning..we do not have any roosters..all hens mostly Rhode Island reds..had 2 barred rocks but one died..have a couple of Easter eggers..any info is greatly appreciated!

! Great to have you with us! Sorry to hear about your lost birds! Could well be the heat - is it also humid where you live? The two combined can be tough on chickens. Do your birds have access to a lot of shade? Shade and breeze and cool water are important in the hot times. You can also wet the ground in the shade and they dig into it and lay in the cool dirt. Good luck to you and your flock!

Yes very humid..we are in process of making more shade..we have 2 windows in the coop and just put a fan in one to draw air inside. We are also trying to get misters hooked up but tge coop is a ways from a faucet hook up..Thank you so much for the reply!

Sounds like a good plan - if it is the heat that will take care of it. I had a Buff Orp and a Black Australorp have what looked like heat stroke last summer - actually cooled them off in some tepid, then gradually cooler water - they snapped out of it. Keep an eye on your birds - if more continue to go down you've got another problem on your hands. Best wishes!!

Ok thank you! Do you think it could be disease if more go down? I could take the most recent one to our animal training school to have it tested I suppose?

So sorry about your birds! Definitely could have been the heat. I'd try to provide them with more shade & add ice to their water. I also fill up containers with a small amount of very cold water so they can wade through. It cools them off pretty quick!

those temps are pretty high and the fact that the coop is in FULL sun, no wonder they are dying. Is the coop a permanent fixture or could you move it to some shady area near trees?

If not have shade cloth on the south and west sides of a run - and some kind of panels as a cover. Misters are good, Freezing gallon jugs of water and setting them around would also be of help. Birds can move close to them. Put ice in the waterers every chance you get. Watermelon is a big hit with chickens and help them cool off.
