Hi im new here :-) so i have a problem, we have 4 hens and a rooster 1 hen became broody and has been sitting on fertile eggs for about a month and yesterday 1 egg was piped and today another hen went and cracked it open and tried killing the chick!!! She took off with it dragging it thru the dirt and i got it from her and brought it inside and its under a heat lamp. The problem is that the yolk sack is out and its eyes are closed and it moves when touched but isnt making noise im just curious if it will survive :-(

Chicks that don't have time to absorb the yolk can sometimes not make it. The best thing you can do is get this one under heat. About 100 degree heat. Babies like this can respond to high heat. This one is like a premie and many times they can recover with heat. But not always. I am so sorry about this chick.

I would put up a barrier for the broody and her babies so she can brood them in peace.

Yes we definitely are going to do that but im not sure if shes going to be a good mama because when i got the other hen to drop it the mama was pecking at it but we are going to separate her and watch very closely! Thank you for your response and i hope this baby will pull thru and i will update on the progress :-)

If you think the broody is not going to be a good momma, you can take her eggs away and finish them yourself in the incubator and brooder. :-)

Ya i was thinking about doing that but im going to give her 1more try at it i think everything that happened might have scared her.

Hello and
welcome-byc.gif
the others have provided you with some great advice! Good luck on the chickens and the rooster!

Thank you everyone!! Unfortunately the chick passed through the night we did all we could for it we are very sad this was our first chick:-( but we will definitely be watching the mamma and eggs very closely. We also seperated them last night so hopefully mom and eggs will be okay :-)
