I have a mixed flock of barred rocks and golden comets and my only rooster is a golden comet. I took a bunch of random eggs into my ag class to hatch them and I ended up with 2 full golden comets and 5 cross breed golden/ barreds...4 of the cross breeds turned out to be all white with a few black spots but the other cross turned out solid black with a brown sort of laced neck and the shape of her head is different from the rest. They are all about 2 1/2 months old now and up until now have been perfectly fine. I went out to their coop the other day and found " hootie" the black with brown neck cross sitting out in the run huddled up like she was cold. I talked to her and normally that gets her attention but she didn't look up, even when I climbed into the run and picked her up she didn't even flinch. I could open her eyes but she would close them again and she will open them for a split second but then close them again. I put her inside the coop and she has continued to do that since yesterday even though she is inside...any suggestions as to what it could be?

I would isolate her and give her broad spectrum antibiotics, keep an eye on her stool, and make some scrambled egg for her (usually perks my girls right up!) Good Luck and keep us updated!

It could be coccidiosis at this age of 2 1/2 months. Symptoms are lethargy, puffing up or hunching, diarrhea with or without blood, poor appetite, and ruffled feathers on the back of the neck. Treat all chicks with Corid (amprollium) liquid 2 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days. After treatment, give several days of probiotics and vitamins. Don't delay treatment since they have the disease several days before symptoms show up. If they don't drink the liquid, give it to them carefully in a syringe or dropper. Alright well I read through the article on coccidiosis and I really do believe that that is what my little hootie has! I got the corid liquid solution about 10 minutes ago. Now, do I seperate her from the rest of the flock? Do I give the solution to just her or the flock too? And should I give it to her in a waterer or a syringe and if it's I'm a syringe does it need to be mixed with water too?

Put the Corid in the waterer and treat ALL the chickens. It wont hurt them if they don't have them, it can only help them. Change out their water daily for 5 days with the Corid, I would also give some mash, and make some scrambled eggs for the girls as well. Mealworms is always a great choice!
