I have been reading that people have fed their sick chickens yogurt & oatmeal & of course egg yolks. Are these the best things to help them get a bit of their strength back? Also I read that it was suggested to give them Tylan 40 right away & then after that to give them the Red Cell for horses if they has drastic muscle lose? What does the Tylan 40 do? Thank you, S&S

I recently gave a sick hen some cooked moose liver, all chopped up with fresh garlic, Cod liver oil, and cayenne pepper. She devoured it in no time, and in 2 days, no more sniffles, or diarhea. I know it sounds gross, but these are all very healing foods.

That is very interesting! I have heard about the cod liver oil but never the meat, garlic & cayenne. I will definitely try anything though. You cooked it as if a person were going to eat it right?

Thank you so much for your help.

Have you ever had any experience with the Tylan 40 or the Red Cell for horses medicines?

Well, since I usually cook liver by dredging it in flour, salt, pepper, and garlic and cook with bacon and onions, the answer is no, I didn't cook it like I usually cook liver.

I just boiled it in some water and chopped it up fine. I stirred the raw fresh garlic in with it before serving her this "delicacy"

Sorry, have never had any experience with Tylan 40 or Red Cell.

Oatmeal is high fiber and chickens can't digest the fiber well. So it's not good for sick birds, but good for dieting birds. I wouldn't recommend giving a random antibiotic right away without knowing what disease you're treating. You could be treating for the wrong thing and a pathogen could quickly become resistant that way.

When my birds are sick, I always give them fresh greens. Lawn clippings for sure and definitely chick weed if it's growing. If I don't know what they have, I give them electrolytes and Poultry Cell to help keep their nutrition up to par. Apple Cider Vinegar, yogurt, Motrin (human med), and Hypericum are all great as a part of supportive therapy. I have more stuff listed on my webpage (linked below Moody's Bantams) Poultry Health > Supportive therapy. Cinnamon and cayenne pepper are good for respiratory problems, and dairy, garlic, and leafy greens are good for digestive upset. But the biggest thing you can give a bird... warmth and a secure environment.
