One of our older hens, Lucy, has not been able to stand for the last ciouple of weeks. She can sometimes drag herself along with her wings, but doesn't have normal leg mobility. (Legs are tucked under - not "split.") I have been nursing her along, bringing her food, and secluded her in a rabbit cage in the chicken run area so that the other dozen hens won't peck at her. She's not too interested in eating, though I've tried enticing her with bread pieces dipped in water or milk, scrambled eggs, and some layer-pellet with scratch. She sometimes pecks a little at these "gourmet varieties" and drinks lots of water, but nothing has really helped. I've never had a hen do this before, and we've had chickens since 2003. Does anyone have any ideas on how to help her? I hope that there is some solution. Thanks in advance!

I am sorry to hear this, maybe it is the heat??? Keep nursing her along until you get better feed back

Is she laying? Is she molted, or has she ever molted? What breed is she? Does she feel thin? Do you worm your chickens? Do you see any sores or scabs on the bottoms of her feet? Is it possible she injured herself jumping down from somewhere?

My hen is a Brown Leghorn - the only one of my 13 hens giving white eggs. She occasionally gave eggs with blood in them (abou 40% of the time). Living in WA, it's not the heat - been raining the last few days (of course!), though we did have a heat wave about 2 weeks ago! No, I don't think she's molting. What is "range parlysis" that I hear about? Can it be cured/ treated?
Thanks again for any help you can give!

it could be some kind of vitamin issue or deficiency, or maybe botulism. Try sending a PM to Glenda Heywood -- she has a wealth of information and will probably be glad to help you in any way she can.

I have never heard of "range paralysis," sorry, and I have no idea what is wrong.

You could research Marek's disease; seems to me to ba a possibility.
