I have a buff orpington, about a year, year and a half old. She was always pretty sweet, not super approachable, but not a problem chicken. Lately she's been fluffing herself up even at the sight of me and squawking like I'm a predator or something. I noticed today that she's been a nest hog. She was in the one nesting box for a few hours today, and is sleeping in there tonight even though I removed the eggs.

Is this what a broody chicken is like? Is she hormonal? Sick?

Back story in case it's helpful, my one chicken got diagnosed with Marek's a few months back, so I'm assuming they all have it. I tend to worry about health problems when I see behavior changes because of this.

Sounds like she is broody! You need to break her. You can do this by putting her in chicken jail, which is a god kennel or small space with food, water and a perch. Leave her there for 24-78 hours.

If your flock was diagnosed with mareks, you can not introduce new chickens to your flock.

I don't have a rooster so she won't get anywhere lol. But I did consider sticking a fertilized egg under her and seeing how it goes.

I'm intrigued by seeing how it goes because the Amish around me don't vaccinate their birds, and I know they've had to have been exposed to Marek's. They just breed stronger more resistant birds now. At least that's what it seems like.
