This is Millie and her 4 partridge rock chicks and 4 blue laced red wyandotte chicks on their first day out free ranging. The chicks hatched 3-11-2010 and I placed them under her that afternoon. She's the best mom, she loved them right away.

Those photos are great!! I really wish I could take my chicks out of the brooder and they would follow me around and stay close. But alas they will have to wait a little while longer...

Sorry! That was my first time uploading to youtube. I think I got it straightened out.

Millie reminds me of Mrs. Cuddlesworth! Was Millie Broody when you placed the chicks under her? Are they separated from the rest of your hens? Just curious.

Congrats! They are very sweet.

Yes she was broody, but I have a cochin roo and I didn't wan mixed breed babies so I found someone who just happened to be hatching chicks. I placed them under her in the middle of the day and she was so pleased she never missed a beat. I have a closet inside the coop that is private where she and her chicks are staying, but she is taking them out to free range with the rest of the flock.
This is a pic of her in the fenced off closet. My husband made it for holding feed, supplies ect.. so the chickens couldn't get to them and make a mess on them, but when emptied out and lined with shavings it makes a good mom and chick house.
