Hen and roo kept nearby but separate?

I’ve been caring for a rescued coturnix roo for a while and he’s quite unhappy and stressed by himself. I have the opportunity to rescue a hen, but know that they can’t be together in a 1:1 ratio.

Can they be kept in separate cages pushed together (or nearby) so they’re not lonely? Or will this likely be too hard on the male?

Buying other quail is not an option as this is an animal rescue organization. I am on the lookout for a group of females but so far no luck.

Having them close enough to see and hear each other will help, but your male will probably continue to crow. Is there a possibility of rehoming him with someone who already has quail?

Thanks for the reply! Crowing is fine with us, as long as it’s not a sign that he’s in a lot of distress. We just want him to be happy.

Sadly no, we can’t presently rehome him. He’s special needs and requires a lot more care than most.

Happy boys don't crow much. A lot of crowing indicates an unhappy boy. He will be happier if he can see and hear another quail, though. If you can only have two, you might actually try another male. Males can get along if there are no females within sight or sound.
